A Questioning Attitude
A questioning Attitude is simply an attitude of ‘being sure.’ It is a cautious and thoughtful approach exercised before, during, and after action. It is a process of fully understanding, considering pertinent ‘what ifs,’ and resolving any questions in your mind before moving forward. A critical aspect of Questioning Attitude is both the advocacy of specific issues and the raising of concerns.
Why?
To challenge preconceptions and assumptions.
To stimulate healthy thoughts regarding processes and procedural steps.
To consider actions and beliefs from differing perspectives.
To prevent rationalization from proceeding when things don’t seem right.
To identify waste and non-value-added activities.
When?
All the time!
How?
Be aware when things don’t seem right and pursue an answer as to why.
Stop when unsure!
Consider the “what if’s” before taking action or making any decisions.
Be deliberate in constructively questioning the thoughts and assumptions of others.
Offer challenging questions in a spirit of helpfulness and caring.
Be open and receptive to being examined by others.
Appoint a ‘devil’s advocate in the decision-making processes.
Never assume anything.
